Brookings July 17 Economists report good crops and rising prices across farm sectors in South Dakota. Strong national income, ample feed and livestock supplies, and demand from factories and defense programs bolster farm markets. Wheat, corn, barley and oats outlooks are favorable, with livestock profits rising as hogs and cattle fetch higher prices amid tight supplies. Printing was broad the American colonies 300 years ago.

Yankton judge sustains Yankton Independent School District in not furnishing free text books to a parochial school pupil. Leonard Haas, guardian ad litem for the plaintiff, challenged the policy in a test action commenced May 1940. The opinion construes the statute to limit free books to public school pupils, but notes potential constitutional questions and suggests free text provision may be equitable in other contexts.
