Grain Acreage In State Indicates More Corn Being Planted Each Year
BROOKINGS July 16 P a decrease of 10 per cent from last year in the acreage of durum wheat an 18 per cent increase in barley acreage and a 5 per cent increase in corn acrea were pointed to today by Joseph L Orr federal agricultural statistician for South Dakota in the July 1 crop report. He noted crop conditions worsened in June with a composite rating of 88 per cent of normal on July 1 down from 100 on June 1. Corn acreage estimated at 4 692 000 acres up 5 per cent from last year and potential production at 121 100 000 bushels. Durum wheat at 1 154 000 acres down 10 per cent with 64 per cent condition. Barley at 1 940 000 acres up from 1928 with 69 per cent condition and 36 812 000 bushels. Flax up 10 per cent to 647 000 acres with 68 per cent condition. Tame hay 1 139 000 acres up. alfalfa first cut good, second slow. Potatoes 60 000 acres with 79 per cent condition. National outputs listed for major crops.
