Florida Banks Face Crisis As Runs Continue

Jacksonville reports a banking crisis as six Florida banks closed in eight days and $9 million in depositors’ money was tied up while state and federal authorities pursue reorganization or liquidation. Merchants Bank and Trust Co and Atlantic Bank and Trust Co in Daytona Beach suspended operations, with doors posted as closed. John N. Fouts, president of four other banks, prepared for preliminary hearings on three charges involving state banking-law violations.

State Farm Life Insurance gets SD license from state official

A Blooming ton Illinois based State Farm Life Insurance Company received authorization from Don C. Lewis, South Dakota insurance commissioner, to operate in the state. Secretary Tompkins says licensing was completed Thursday and plans a two day conference of district agents in Huron with agents meetings statewide starting July 19 in Parker and continuing through July 26 in Sioux Falls

Senators Wheeler Prazier Tour Western Indian Reservations

Senators Burton Wheeler and Lynn J. Prazier members of the Senate Indians Affairs committee began an inspection tour of western reservations in South Dakota. Joined by Senator McMaster they opened at Greenwood agency near Wagner and plan to visit Pins Ridge and Rosebud agencies next week staying in the state through midweek.

Mrs H N Morris and Mrs A R McGorvin of Long Beach left yesterday for Aurora Nebraska after a brief visit with Mrs Angie Chaffee. They plan a six month automobile tour heading toward the Atlantic coast.

Chiropractors Gather for South Dakota Meeting in Huron

More than 100 chiropractors from across South Dakota arrive in Huron for the annual convention at the Marvin Hughitt hotel. The program features music and entertainment for guests, with official proceedings including by law revisions, committee appointments, officer reports, and elections. The banquet and dance cap the opening day, with Tuesday dedicated to speakers and the final business session to name the 1930 convention city and officers.

Lightning Fire Destroys Randolph Depot

A July thunder shower struck Randolph causing a depot at Randolph to burn completely. The Catholic church steeple sustained little damage. Local officials noted the event as a lightning strike with property loss reported at the depot.

Prohibition Agents Seize Large Minnesota Liquor Plant

Federal agents raided eight miles southwest of Iona Lake Minnesota and confiscated a large liquor plant with 100 to 350 gallon capacity. Albert Brake Leo Menke and Robert Voss were arrested and jailed in St Paul with agents from the raid. Two stills were found along with related supplies.

Horace Barton of Sioux Falls faces Carl Meyer of Watertown in the Sioux Valley tennis finals for the men's singles after Barton beat Art Brunstedt 6 1 11 9 and Meyer defeated Claude Krause 8 6 4 6 1 6 3 in semifinals. Barton and Krause also reached doubles finals with opponents to be determined. Dorothy Martin of Le Mars moved to the women’s singles semifinals after beating McDermott and Kaiser. Demand College Building Probe at Spearfish

Pierre July 13 The state board of regents directed attorney general and state engineer to investigate responsibility for defects in the College hall at Spearfish. The building, completed in 1926 after a $315,000 appropriation to replace a fire-destroyed structure, is to be temporarily supported with timbers as two other support elements fail.

Tariff Forces Face Protests In Senate Revision Debate

Washington July 13 Indications multiply that administration forces in the senate will steer a middle course in tariff revision while protests mount against house rate increases. Senator Lodge Republican New Jersey favors trimming the house bill and even the present law in some industrial schedules, but supports increases on others. Canada protests over house rates on shingles lumber and feeder cattle were outlined to Secretary Stimson by Minister Massey, as Australia’s tariff policy was reviewed by Senate Finance Committee Chairman Smoot during final hearings before rewrite.

Huron Women to Land in England Next Week

Mrs. C. N. McIlvaine and Mrs. Arla J. Willard of Huron are aboard the Empress of Scotland en route to Southampton expected to arrive Tuesday next week. They plan about two and a half months in Europe with an extensive tour of the British Isles and continental countries.

Polish and French Fliers Vie For Trans Atlantic Race

Two rival airplanes from Poland and France launched from Paris bound for New York in a first trans Atlantic air race. Marshals Idsikow Ki and Casimir Scubala led the Polish effort aboard the Marshal Pilsudski, while Dieudonne Cote and Jacquest Bellonte piloted the French machine near Bay of Biscay. Both crews aimed to reach New York the next day with the Polish craft trailing on a longer northern route though weather favored progress for both.
