Seeds of a Prairie Evergreen: Lydick’s Shelterbelt Triumph
A Nebraska farmer J J Lydick near Craig began planting evergreens in 1910 to combat wind and drought. He built windbreaks from Austrian pine white pine Douglas fir concolor fir and spruces, protecting crops and livestock. The 44 concolor fir lines planted for the Nebraska State Capitol grounds showed the value of his shelterbelts in drought years 1934 and 1936, preserving yields and orchard bounty.
