South Dakota Population Trends Through 1940 and Beyond
South Dakota faces population shifts tied to agriculture and migration. Historical data show gains in 1880s and 1900s amid settlement and prosperity, then declines since 1930 due to drought, depression, and farm consolidation. Projections suggest future net gains may resume with settled population patterns and births outpacing deaths as immigration stabilizes.
