Bank Deposits Rise as Insurance Plan Takes Effect
A survey by the South Dakota Bankers Association shows strong early deposits after the federal insurance plan began. Forty-three banks reported increases averaging over $5,000 per bank and $478 per new account, with many funds moving from postal savings and some wheat allotment checks being deposited. Banks expect more funds to shift to banks as certificates mature, while noting the 2-cent check tax and the lack of need for postal savings.
