South Dakota Farmer Praises Terrace Farming Results
Alcester Jan 22 Special Walter Scott a landowner five miles southeast of Alcester reports rising yields since terracing began on his Moody and Crofton gilt loom farm with a 10 percent slope. S A Nilson, who farms the land, says terraces curb erosion and boost fertility after three years of use. Soil Conservation plans on Scott’s farm ended in July 1941 detailing terraces pasture hayland alfalfa and other acreage. Nilson builds terraces with a plow disc and A-drag while technicians from the Soil Conservation Service handle layout. Terraces are broad base gradient types constructed at five percent vertical intervals with soil moved to terrace ridges, a process that can take three seasons.
