The State University hosts a news casting contest during the women’s debate tournament on January 19 and 20 at Vermillion. Each of 12 schools may enter one crew. scripts are prepared beforehand and judged for original, feminine perspective news presentation on KUSD. An extemporaneous poetry reading contest is also on the program with five minutes prep.

AAA Has No Plans To Boost Acreage Goal On Wheat

Washington January 18 The agricultural adjustment administration says it does not intend to raise the planting goal for spring wheat despite a drought plagued winter belt. M M E Dodd Western division director calls reports unfounded asserting no need to increase the wheat planting goal. The 1940 goal is 65 000 000 acres down from 35 000 000 last year. Only growers within allotments will be eligible for benefits and crop loans.

Collect Coins In Paralysis Fight In Beadle County

Debate Tournament Here Saturday at Huron High

Debaters from twelve high schools in central and eastern South Dakota gather for an invitational tournament Saturday at Huron High School. D C Reuttter leads the event as practice for upcoming competition. Schools include Mitchell St Lawrence Redfield Highmoore Wesley Doland Envin De Smet Clark Wessington Springs Sand Creek and Huron. Public sessions begin at 9 30 Saturday morning with coaches judging the debates.

Wisconsin High Court Rules Bingo a Gambling Game

Wisconsin state supreme court ruled that bingo is a gambling game and may be outlawed under the public nuisance statute. The court affirmed Milwaukee circuit judge Charles L. Aarons in restraining Mr and Mrs Edward Zrimsek from renting Bahn Frei hall in Milwaukee for bingo playing.

Blast at Powder Works Kills Two at DuPont Plant

In Gibbstown New Jersey an accidental explosion of three tons of nitroglycerine at the Repaupo DuPont powder works killed two workers and injured five. State police colonel Kimberling ruled out sabotage though federal and local investigators examined the incident.

Highway Crashes Kill 136 In 1939 Toll Holds Steady

Pierre January 18 The 1939 toll from motor vehicle accidents was 13 deaths, the same as 1928, Secretary of State Olive Ringsrud announced. Accidents rose from 1,234 in 1938 to 1,397 in 1939 and injuries from 849 to 1,202. Property damage fell from 244,610 to 249,438 dollars, with only 6 percent blamed on intoxication and excessive speeding listed as the principal cause.

Thompson Fails Back Dismissal of Dr Simmons

H Kern of Thompson Fails who urged dismissal of Dr Simmons in the sub committee minority report said he agreed with Moss 100 per cent. Moss and Ray G Lowe of Glendive signed the majority report urging retention of the president as a result of disputes between a faculty group and Dr Simmons. The board recently asked for resignations from five professors. Forty teachers have petitioned the board to investigate Dr Simmons administration.
