Northwest Production presents a two day Victory Exposition in Huron South Dakota January 14 and 15 featuring Fort Meade armored vehicle displays ROTC drills university band concerts flag demonstrations and a series of speeches and musical performances at Huron College Auditorium and downtown venues with officials including Mayor J S Tschetter and Dr Weeks.
A historical schedule lists Fort Meade armored vehicle demonstrations at 9:30 and 4:30 to 5:00 on Third Street with a State College ROTC drill squad program at State College Auditorium. The event features remarks by Dr. Jackson and Major Darlin, a band concert, and a God Bless America finale with the audience.
Huron hosts Northwest Production for Victory Exposition next Wednesday and Thursday. Exhibits, displays, and posters showcase the nation’s war production, organized by the Huron Chamber of Commerce and the South Dakota USDA Defense Board. Attendees see bands, educational institution displays, and military demonstrations from Fort Meade and local units.
Circuit Judge Frank R. Fisher ruled that Alfred Smith Lavere Nelson and Richard Quinn must serve one year in the penitentiary with a chance of release sooner. Royal Oak Michigan June Teddy Burton age 11 sent $428.88 to the President to help win the war. The boy withdrew his entire bank account with parental permission and mailed the funds to the White House.
Chinese communique says two columns reached the northern and northeastern outskirts of Canton during an assault on the outer defenses of the Japanese-held city. The report also notes penetration toward Nanchang, the capital of Kiangsi Province. Fighting continued as the exchange escalated in South China.
War Department reports combat in the Philippines shrinking to minor skirmishes as Japanese forces move reinforcements northward in preparation for a heavy assault. In the Malay peninsula, Japanese drives push toward Singapore while Allied forces hold. The Navy notes four Japanese ships sunk, including a transport, as submarines carry out dangerous missions. Tokyo papers predict U S invasion and rapid Pacific battles, warning of attacks on the United States coast. Washington observers remain unconcerned, citing logistical hurdles and vast distance for any cross continental invasion.
Washington reports indicate induction into the army is being stepped up toward quadruple or higher of peacetime rates. Officials say immediate goal is a four million man land force, with the army accelerating current registrants including about one million already 1A while awaiting draw from nine million men age 20.
