Counties Are TB Free in Western South Dakota
PIERRE Jan 9 A R Russell secretary of agriculture said counties in western South Dakota are officially certified as modified tuberculosis free. Nine other counties west of the Missouri River will be certified after retests of herds from which reactor cattle were removed are completed. Testing covered 20 051 herds and about 550 000 cattle from Sept 16 to Dec 21. Several counties already accredited west of the Missouri include Stanley Armstrong Dewey Ziebach Lyman Jones Jackson Medlette Washabaugh Bennett Washington Shannon Fall River Custer Pennington Meade Harding. No herd owner refused testing and cooperation allowed faster completion than expected. The force of veterinarians, three temporarily with the federal bureau of animal industry, now works in east river counties. Hyde Buffalo Brule have been tested and Sanborn Jer sauid Roberts Day Walworth Potter will follow in January. No owners have refused tests for cattle in the remaining counties. Russell said a suit seeking to enjoin testing in southeastern counties would receive a reply soon.
