Senate committee opens study on recession blame
The Senate committee plans no blame game between labor and capital as it investigates unemployment. Chairman Byrnes says aims are to secure cooperation from employers, workers, and government and to design possible relief legislation to create jobs. Witnesses note sharp job losses in late 1937, with declines in manufacturing, construction, and railroads, while Christmas retail hiring provided only partial offset.
