Narrower Strips Show Wind Erosion Protection Tips

The Soil Conservation Service notes farmers in the Huron area seek technical help to narrow crop strips to curtail wind erosion. Contour and wind strips are recommended up to ten rods wide, with allowances down to five or three rods in vulnerable spots. A five year rotation featuring small grain and clover improves humus and soil preservation.

Spink County Adopts Vegetative Cover For Soil Protection

Spink County farmers and Beadle County neighbors adopt vegetative cover to prevent soil erosion. Henry Schroeder, chair of the Helmont-Garfield Voluntary Soil Conservation Association, stresses rough tillage alone fails to protect soil and urges planting cover crops like Sudan cane to catch snow and boost moisture.

Howard Farmer To Increase Acreage Of Resistant Crop

Howard Farmer plans to plant more of the Sooner mile a half mile in Ballaview Township Miner County. J 5 Adkins reports successful planting on July 4 after spring rains and heat. The 60 acre stand yielded about 40 bushels per acre with early fall rains. Harvest ran from September 3 to 27, 83 days after planting. Thirty acres yielded 20 bushels per acre. hogs and cattle ate the rest, discouraging threshing remaining acres. Adkins intends to plant 10 acres or more next year and may sell threshed seed if germination is strong enough for seed use.

Startling Figures On Tree Plantings By Wolsey Shue Creek

The 1531 tree and shrub plantings by Wolsey Shue Creek in cooperation with the Soil Conservation Service line along the east highway of Huron. Estimates show 40 acres planted at $10,000 form a belt about 5 miles long and 1 mile wide. The windbreaks should cut wind erosion and moisture loss, make unusable land productive, and aid wildlife. Northern fields freeze deeply without snow cover unless vegetative protection is adequate.

Livestock as a Solution for South Dakota Farming

Regional Farm Management Adviser George McLeod argues for shifting from cash grain to livestock to stabilize income in drought-prone South Dakota. He cites past loan patterns favoring livestock, notes long transition with pasture, and highlights statewide interest in a durable farming program.

Grass and Feed Crops For Statewide Livestock Farming

Culture researchers note grasses and feed crops suited to different state areas. Farmers can obtain college guidance on reseeding, range control, pasture management, and varieties for their conditions. Emphasis on protein and minerals, with alfalfa and sweet clover as protein sources. With permanent grass and livestock-focused plans, soil erosion is reduced and farm costs lower, while thriftier stock improves overall profitability.

Grass seed crops offer long term soil and income benefits

The state faces weed losses from field bindweed and values grass as a stabilizing, perennial solution. Seed production shows strong profit potential in eastern regions, with grass improving soil fertility and reducing erosion. A long term rotation could retire land to grass for multiple years, boosting farm diversification.

Grass roots reshape soil and drought resilience on prairies

A detailed review of perennial grasses like crested wheat grass shows deep root systems over two miles long in Saskatoon samples, enhancing soil tilth, water holding capacity, and aeration. The study argues that long lasting grass cover reduces erosion, supports range restoration, and offsets drought harms through carbon nitrogen balance and extended nitrogen benefits.
