Grant County Herds Lead in January Butterfat Production
Grant County Dairy Herd Improvement Association topped the state in profitable dairying for January with an average butterfat per cow of 31.7 pounds, per G Heebink of the State College extension service. Other strong performers included Bon Homme, Lake, Day, Castlewood, Brookings-Moody, Yankton, Day No 1 and Marshall counties. The Grant county group has 310 cows, 104 of which produced more than 40 pounds of butterfat. seven Holsteins owned by William Hebner led statewide at 46.5 pounds. The overall average butterfat for 3273 tested cows was 28 pounds and milk production averaged 59 pounds. A total of 646 cows exceeded 40 pounds, with 117 herds averaging at least 25 pounds.

Lebanon farmers shipped 13 double deck and 7 single deck hogs totaling 1,332 head and 417,675 pounds for 83,938 dollars. Cattle shipments of 260 head weighed 193 pounds and brought 13,773 dollars, while 223 sheep totaled 17,480 pounds and yielded 2,121 dollars.
