Jonas Appears At Gann Valley Meeting

Deputy state superintendent Russel Jones spoke at the Buffalo county school officers and teachers meeting in Gann Valley. He urged state aid to remedy funding inequalities, discussed problem teachers and school boards, and showed charts on district costs and indebtedness. Superintendent Gertrude Flyte reported perfect teacher attendance.

Coyotes Caught After Morning Chase Near Cavour

South of Cavour on February 2 an alert farmer and Huron bound hunter Mr Cummings, with his wolfhounds, tracked and caught two coyotes after an all day chase. Cummings earlier bagged one at the Tuttle farm, with a second sighting reported ten miles south west.

Relief Work Is Resumed At Yale

Relief work resumes in Yale with a one mile gravel stretch from Stahl's corner toward Highway 14. About 40 men and 30 teams are employed on February allotments, under J F E C Keefe, with Clyde Smith of Huron as county chairman.

Graveling Project Completed in Cavour This Month

Cavour reports the February graveling shift under Beadle county relief director Clyde R. Smith of Huron. Ten blocks in Cavour have been graveled and the project extended to the road north from the stock yards, about half a mile gravelled this month. The road carries heavy north country traffic, livestock, produce and grain to Cavour markets. Community sentiment favors extending the graveling several miles north if possible in March to improve traffic into Cavour.

Recreational Center At Fort Proposed In Lake Region

Dr G C Redfield of Rapid City district vice president of the Izaak Walton league proposes the state game and fish commission develop a recreational center at the site of 012 Port Sisseton in eastern South Dakota Lake Region to benefit the public. He opposes a plan to use the Fort site for an Indian hospital and school and lobbied at Pierre to promote the tract.

Warren Bailey High In Scholastic Work

Warren Bailey W Cavour, a sophomore in the agricultural division at State college, ranked seventeenth in grades in the entire student body during the quarter. To achieve the high ranking he needed superior grades in all subjects and a perfect score in more than one. Broadland reports several local notices: Borge Sackett bought equipment for the White Rose gasoline station, with George Moriarty as operator, from Walter Bosms and J. H. owning the building. A visit at Broadland featured Mr and Mrs Lyle Glazier hosting guests including Mr and Mrs Viney of Lake Anex. a pot luck dinner followed. A miscellaneous shower was given at H. C. Du Bois home for Mrs Robert Du Bois, formerly Miss Lara Payne, with ice cream and cake served. In Wayland, five tables of Norwegian whist showed the men defeating the women by a small margin, with ice cream and cake served afterward.

Eastern Star entertains Woonsocket chapter ladies

The Eastern Star in Woonsocket hosted a ladies night with bridge as the main entertainment. Mrs Hazel Briges received high score, Mrs Marie Jamigoni won the all-out prize, and Miss Hazel Hobart won the low score prize.

District Debaters Compete At Webster

Webster hosts the fourth district debate tournament of the state high school association with Aberdeen Milbank Groton Webster and Britton teams. Aberdeen faces Webster at 1 pm, Groton versus Milbank at 2:40 pm, and Britton meets the Aberdeen Webster winner at 4 pm with Rev. F H Laurerson of Webster serving as judge for all events.

Minneapolis Woman Honored At Wayland Club Event

Wayland February 22 Special Mrs Corda Dinsmore of Minneapolis was honored guest of Mrs Edna Johansen at her home. Sixteen Fortnightly club members attended with auction bridge at four tables. Dora McKay won high score, Nell Yost second high. A guest prize was given to Mrs Dinsmore. Refreshments were served by the hostess and Mildred Hutchinson before departure.

Wayland February 22 Special The Wayland high school senior class hosted at Dorothy Ravenscroft's home with 24 guests. Bridge played over six tables. Lil lian Grentzmacker and Carl Johansen high scorers. Georgia Mitchell and Howard Sorenson received consolation prizes. Mrs A J Ravenscroft served midnight refreshments assisted by Dorothy and Marguerite Hultins.

Wool Men Want Extension Work In South Dakota

Nearly 30 South Dakota wool growers oppose cutting the state college extension service. They warn drastic budget reductions would render the service unworkable for about 2,000 members while pledging support to the federal farm board and marketing act. The Aberdeen convention featured lectures by George Roberts and others and closed with a banquet. In St Lawrence, Christian Endeavor members hosted guests from Miller Presbyterian church for a joint fellowship meeting with music and discussion led by Rev. O Neill.

Young People Plan Foreign Contact Through Letters

The Young People's society of the Congregational church in Gann Valley plans to establish international links by correspondence with youths in India, China, Arabia, Africa, and Japan. Labor Situation Changes Little Open Winter Permits Unusual Amount Of Road

Mitchell February report by Charles Weller shows January labor in South Dakota barely changed. Open winter allowed extensive highway construction and dam work funded by the Reconstruction Finance Corp. Public buildings and mills stayed active while many plants operated on reduced schedules. Meatpacking and ice harvest provided some work, while public utilities and rail crews decreased. A farm labor surplus appeared as demand dwindled and gorillas noted in a stray line.

Mitchell February 22 Representatives of the South Dakota congress of parents and teachers recommend defeating the free text book repeal and the senate bill 82 for a shorter school arm while urging continuation of state college extension work. The group wired officials including the lieutenant governor and house speaker with officers and district presidents on the board.
