Permanent Status For S. D. Teachers Asked By Brennan
In South Dakota, Rep. Joe Brennan proposes a bill to grant permanent status after two years in any school. The measure would classify staff with under two years as probationary, set indefinite contracts for permanent teachers, and require a 20 day notice to dismiss probationaries. Permanent teachers could be discharged only for cause after an impartial hearing, with appeal to circuit courts. Political or religious views would not be valid grounds for dismissal.

Straw Stack Becomes Local Childs Playground at Depot
In Lake Preston on February 21, a farmers stockpile of baled straw near the Milwaukee depot draws children from the area. One boy imagines climbing Matterham, sliding along a smooth straw track, and digging tunnels in straw caves as he plays.
