Police round up eight in Sioux Falls theft ring

Sioux Falls police say two exconvicts Frank Hoffeltz and George Nelson confess to 18 robberies across the state. They, along with Ralph Miller Ed Pilgrim of Mitchell and three Miller relatives Lizzie Ramsey and the Zentzs, are held on charges of receiving stolen property and taking part in the spree that touched Chancellor Crampton Mitchell Hartford Humboldt Pukwana Tyndall Canton and Sioux Falls.

Warn motorists drive carefully on state highways

Pierre Feb 8. Motorists are cautioned to drive carefully on state highways and use them only when necessary as weather conditions delay snow drift clearance. D A McKinnon maintenance engineer says plows have been withdrawn until safer conditions permit effective work. Snow drifts rapidly reaccumulate, increasing danger as gravel is exposed on snow packed ditches prompting vehicles into ditches. Plows and crews will resume clearance when weather permits, noting winds hinder rather than aid driving public.

Farm Bureau Opposes Repeal of Hail Insurance Law

South Dakota Farm Bureau federation opposes repeal of the state hail insurance law. Frank Cunait of Firesteel says the executive and legislative committees are on record against repeal, noting the law has saved farmers millions and stabilized rates over the past nine or ten years. The bureau remains emphatically opposed to repeal.

Rapid City February 8. Endre Helmark of Kalispell seeks guardianship of the two children of Reuben Helmark the confessed slayer of his estranged wife. Mrs Joe Bahr of California sister of the condemned man represents the elder Helmark in county court. Benjamin Hasselstrom brother of the slain woman objects to guardianship claims. Hasselstrom discovered his sister’s body at the ranch home.

Fire chiefs from the Black Hills region and upstream communities met in Rapid City to plan a consolidated two organization program for the upcoming fire chiefs convention and firemens tournament. Parmley of Ipswich was elected president of the State Historical Society at its 15th biennial meeting in Pierre succeeding W. D. Nelson who became vice president.
