Crop Show Prizes and Cups Set for Brookings Event

Brookings, Feb 3. A premium list for the state crop show at Brookings February 8 and 9 includes cash premiums totaling 400 dollars and eight loving cups. Classes cover corn varieties, small grains, seeds, and 4-H entries from several counties. Entries must reach the agronomy department by February 7, with mail samples due by 10 a.m. February 8. public programs feature farmers and free coffee.

Bright Selects Play Ensemble for Pinafore at Sioux Falls

Sioux Falls College music conservatory announces a selected ensemble for the light opera H. M. S. Pinafore to be presented. Prof. Lee Bright, director, released the list and noted a renewed intensive rehearsal schedule after exams. He plans to concentrate rehearsals on the ensemble in the coming weeks.

The Foorlights club at State College delays Ten Nights in a Barroom to February 15 due to illness among cast members. The old time melodrama tells the decline of Joe Morgan from a once happy village as Tim Shay Arthur's story unfolds, with the club aiming to present it with sincerity.

Iroquois defeated Cavour 35 to 20 on the Iroquois floor, building a 25 to 8 first half lead. Welder scored 16 of Iroquois 35 as rivals struggled to contain him.

Choir Festival To Be Conducted Again At State College

BROOKINGS Feb 3 The second annual South Dakota Choir festival will be held in the Coolidge Sylvan Theater at State college Sunday evening July 4. More than 300 singers took part last year with eight church denominations collaborating. Harry L Kabler professor of voice at State college directs the event and selects music suitable for Christmas Easter and Thanksgiving while other anthems fit general use. Many last year’s anthems are still sung in church services. Registration blanks are being sent to pastors and choir directors to join in this state musical event.

Forestburg P T A to Meet February 7 at Presbyterian

Forestburg P T A plans its February meeting on Tuesday February 7 at the Presbyterian church. The birthday month cake ceremony will include lunch of sandwiches cake and coffee for five cents. Pupils from fifth and sixth grades perform cornet solos by Mr Williamson. Public speaking class members will present talks on the PTA history. School papers from all departments will be read.

Athol and Tulare Debaters Meet in Exchange

Athol high school debate team met Tulare on Monday evening at Athol with Tulare affirmative and Athol negative. Athol squad includes juniors LaVerne Proden Curtis Ingalls and Robert Booth and senior Evelyn Batteen. A resume debate with Tulare repeats tonight there. The sole upcoming decision debate is against Conde on Feb 9. The team has held eleven debates so far.

Adventists Conclude State Elders Convention in Redfield

A three day session of the seven day Adventist church elders convention ended in Redfield with elders from across the state in attendance. Gordon Oss of Watertown led the South Dakota conference and J F Piper of Lincoln Nebraska aided. Piper spoke on addressing religious needs in a time of low mood.

Automobile Collision Near Redfield Injures Two

Leslie McKinley of Watertown and Ernest Nelson of Chamberlain were unhurt in a collision when their car narrowly avoided a westbound electric train at the North Westen crossing near the Plainview academy grounds. The car struck the train, damaging its front end, as passengers attended a seven day Adventist church elders convention in Redfield. Two local residents were treated for non serious injuries.

Oldham Pioneers Fete Golden Wedding Anniversary

LAKE PRESTON Feb 3 Special Mr and Mrs Henry Menzel sr pioneers of Kingsbury county celebrated their golden wedding anniversary this week at their Oldham home. He came to Kingsbury county in 1880 from Wisconsin and married Alyina Mintzlaff in 1883. They walked eight miles to their homestead for their honeymoon. They helped found the first school in the county part donating land. Ten children and 32 grandchildren plus one great grandchild are part of their family. Nearly 100 neighbors attended the reception as the couple, in good health, marked the occasion.

Presho Turkey Shipments Continue After Holidays

Fresho, Feb. 3. A local company resumes operations on a larger scale shipping dressed turkeys to eastern hotels and cafes. Thirty five workers are employed in picking and packing duties along with five staff for weighing and handling. A full carload of dressed turkeys was shipped recently with more on the way.

Maurice Kochenderfer of Hendricks Minnesota has been elected president of the Augustana college student association in Sioux Falls for the year. A junior and noted athlete, he captained the 1932 Augustana football team to the South Dakota conference title and is a regular guard on the Viking basketball squad. He also served on the student executive board and maintains high scholastic ranking.

Portrait Of Stratton Received At Yankton

A portrait of Frederick Eugene Stratton, a sixty year Fargo college official who merged with Yankton college, was received by President G W Nash. The portrait, sent by Dr A R Bergeson of Fargo, will hang in Fiske assembly with other Fargo and Yankton college portraits. Stratton came from Carleton college as dean of Fargo and served as Greek professor and librarian until 1922, dying in New York City on June 4, 1928.

Northern Student Patents Automobile Jack in SD

Herman Gruhn a senior at Northern State Teachers College designed a small jack lifting about twelve tons built in Aberdeen in K O Lee shops. Plans by Gruhn and Dr. J F Quinn funded the project and a patent has been granted. The aluminum alloy jack weighs 60 pounds, with production jacks at 30 pounds, display in the Industrial Arts building, and a New York trial planned with a Motor Transportation Co of America engineer.

Former Man Sentenced in Iowa Forgery Case

Council Bluffs Iowa February report states J W Kramer aged 52 formerly of Mitchell appeared before Judge Fudge O Wheeler and pleaded guilty to uttering a forged instrument. He received a 15 year term in the Iowa State Prison after arrest last week. Authorities found forged checks totaling $160,000 on the Maryville bank.

Escaped Convicts Returned To Céils

Sioux Falls report notes Elias Wipt aged 23 and Earl Conroy 22 fled from the Dakota prison. Both were captured after visiting relatives in Sioux Falls and Miller this week, with Wipt to serve one and a half years and Conroy two and a half years remaining on their sentences.
