Seed Potatoes Go Through Rigorous Certification Process
The article explains how seed potatoes must be grown in a dedicated 300 foot apart tuber unit plot, cut into four pieces per potato, with spacing to separate sprouts. If any plant shows disease the quad is discarded, and seed is treated with acid mercury before planting in certified stock fields. Inspections ensure purity against blackleg and other diseases, with black tag approval by the South Dakota Potato Growers Association.
