Antique Washington hand press kept at college
The South Dakota State College laboratory houses an antique Washington hand press dating to 1829. Obtained in 192 from Elkton Record, it stayed in use there until about 1918. Although still produced by some firms for proofing plates, the press now sits in the basement of the men’s dormitory due to space limits.

Course To Aid In Defense Program At State College
South Dakota State College in Brookings will offer a short term machine design course as part of the national defense program. The 12 week session begins around January 15 with no tuition. students must cover maintenance. Eligibility requires engineering graduates or two to three years of engineering study plus relevant experience. Trade courses in carpentry forging and welding will also run January 6 for 12 weeks, taught by J A Bonell and H P Bloom. Enrollment is limited due to demand for defense training.

January WPA Employment Quota Raised for South Dakota
Mitchell reports the January 1941 WPA employment quota for South Dakota increased by 900 to 23,150. State administrator M A Kennedy announced the readjustment stems from declines in industrial states due to defense work, not changes in national WPA totals.
