Homestake Plans Major Mine Workforce Reduction
Homestake Mining Company will release more than 300 employees to meet a War Production Board limit. General Manager Guy Bjorge said the mine can now operate a maximum of 190 workers, including 60 for ore removal and milling over six months, with 730 workers in non mining operations at Spearfish. The WPB order closing gold mines aimed to reserve miners for strategic work after a rejected strategic project.
