South Dakota Relied Heavily On Federal Aid In 1938

Federal emergency funds spent in South Dakota totaled $91,563,372.62 from April 8, 1935 to Oct. 31, 1938, with the Works Progress Administration accounting for $39,099,964.04 and the Farm Security Administration for $27,622,346.17. Grasshopper infestations devastated fields across the state while relief programs stretched and then contracted as funds ran down. Republican gains brought Gladys Pyle to the Senate and Karl Mundt to the House, shaping new political dynamics as flood controls and Mount Rushmore funding continued through federal programs and drought relief plans.
