He and two native assistants ventured toward the crater to study heat from lava. one native fled early, the other stayed until the eruption. Borchardt is thought to have perished in a ravine while the native was injured fleeing. No trace found after search. Merapi’s ongoing eruption has killed many natives, with villages burned and mudfalls, forcing evacuations as rains and darkness shadow the area. In Moscow Dec 29 Alexis Rykoff, a rightist premier-aligned leader, is removed as head of the union council of people's commissars. Molotov named as successor amid Stalin-era realignments. Rykoff, 49, banished in 1902, had long clashed with Stalinists and other right-wing figures.
