Water pressure dropped for up to two hours in parts of St Louis after valves were shut at a city waterworks amid a strike by operating engineers. Water Commissioner John B Dean blamed someone in sympathy with the engineers. The outage affected hospitals and institutions as the union dispute between the operating engineers and the International Brotherhood of Firemen and Oilers entered its third day.
In Brockton Massachusetts on December 15 doctors announced a successful operation in which Vera Stankus 26 donated 18 skin grafts from her thigh to restore the abdomen and legs of her five year old daughter Lorraine who suffered third degree burns from a clothing fire last September 10. The child hoped for overshoes and an umbrella for Christmas as she recovers in hospital with no anesthetic used for the graft.
Eighteen Patterson survivors waited on Cape Fairweather Beach Alaska as two sailors perished when the motorship grounded early Monday. Two guides from Juneau will attempt a 30 mile trek to reach the men. Coast guardsmen await calmer seas while a cutter may launch to remove the seamen if conditions permit.
A three story Armour Packing Company plant in Brooklyn was destroyed by a fire described as suspicious by Deputy Fire Chief George McAleer. Flames followed an explosion report as CIO and AFL unions strike against Wilson, Armour, Swift and Cudahy packinghouses with demands including higher pay, union recognition, and a 40 hour week. over 1,000 workers idle amid city wide labor actions and negotiations by U S Department of Labor conciliator John L. Conner.
Clair Roddewig South Dakota attorney general will join the Kirby law office in Sioux Falls after January. Tom Kirby head of the firm announced Roddewig is ending his two year term as attorney general and previously served as an assistant under former Attorney General Walter Conway.
Lima Peru December 15 The Argentine delegation at the Pan American Conference said Argentina gained a dominant position in talks on continental solidarity and that the United States abandoned hopes for a nonaggression pact in favor of a policy of mere declaration. The dispute centered on Mexican Argentine proposals about exemptions from foreign protection and the right to collect government debts by force, with US oppose US Colombia and Venezuela seen as opposing the joint Argentine Mexican plan.
Secretary Ickes announced he will not run for mayor of Chicago next year, saying his work as Secretary of the Interior helps advance the New Deal better from his current post. He cited White House influence and support from the President in his decision and defended Roosevelt’s potential renomination. He also noted opposition within his own party to a third term for Roosevelt.
