Planning Board Urges Campaign To Eradicate S D Weed Pests
Brookings December report from the South Dakota State Planning Board urges a township cooperative approach to eradicate weed pests in the state. Creeping jenny and leafy spurge are named among the worst threats, with weeds described as any plant interfering with crops or ornamentals. The board calls for a law enabling cooperative weed-eradication associations under agriculture, requiring two thirds petition from residents, and obliging state and railroads to remove weeds on their lands. It notes widespread infestations in the Missouri River area and brown county, stressing control is hampered by seeds lasting years in the soil and the need to prevent seeding for many years.
