Ey Elton C Fay Washington December 10 1942 Bernt Balchen famed for Byrd trans Atlantic rescues led a new mission saving seven survivors of a B 17 crash in Greenland The Army Air Forces Navy and Coast Guard joined the effort Balchen and his crew completed 55 interior flights landing three times and dropping supplies before the last marooned man was recovered March 6 in a five month search Two crew members and three rescuers died but Balchen argues Greenland weather is the only bad factor and the route could not be used for regular air travel
