The 5,033-ton German freighter Idarwald sank after a British prize crew aboard the Diomede failed to prevent the ship from being scuttled by its German crew. The 45 Germans became prisoners aboard the Diomede. The incident follows reports the Idarwald was set afire and opened seacocks. the ship had left Tampico Nov 29 headed for Spain to run the British blockade.

British Shipping Losses Shrink In Week End Dec 1

The admiralty reported 13 merchant ships totaling 52 229 tons were sunk by enemy action in the week ended Dec 1, below the war average of about 65 ships or roughly 62 000 tons. The tally included 41 360 tons of British ships, 5 734 tons from three allied vessels, and 5 135 tons from one neutral ship, as Germans claimed 227 500 tons sunk that week.
