Calorie conscious Rations for Byrd Antarctic crew
Washington reports special foods prepared by the department of agriculture for Admiral Richard E. Byrd’s Antarctic voyage. Fifty four six ounce cans of potato mill wafers, a dry pea soup powder, and two whey candy varieties are aboard. The wafers resemble potato chips but are fat free. One can of precooked pea soup mixed with four fans of water yields a palatable fish dish. Butterfat in the powder remains sweet for a year. Whey candy replaces sugar with whey solids, improving candy quality.
