Farmers Would Pay Rate Boost in Freight Increase
Aberdeen December 3 The proposal of a 1 percent freight rate increase asked by US railroads would cost South Dakota between three and five million dollars annually, State Railroad Commissioner L Doherty told the South Dakota Farmers Elevator Association at its three day convention. Agriculture would bear the cost via lower sale prices and higher purchase prices. More than 200 delegates are registered with about 20 more expected. Kenneth Keller Lead attorney for Homestake Mining Co urged tax relief on mining to attract capital, saying excessive taxation drives land and forces termination of operations on marginal ores. Election of officers and approval of resolutions wrap up the convention Thursday morning.
