Shelterbelt sentiment grows in plains revival

Washington reports rising support for reviving the Great Plains shelterbelt project. Officials note 35 to 50 percent of original plantings survived two severe droughts in 1934 and 1935, as farmers and former critics grow more favorable toward the windbreak plan. Roosevelt boosted the effort in 1934 with 15 million dollars for planting a border of trees 10 miles wide from Canada to Texas to curb dust storms and drought. Critics argued Congress eventually cut funding, yet many settlers see value in tree belts protecting homes, farms, and fields from wind and cold blasts.
