Platte student to receive bronze barberry medal

Frances Johnson of Platte high reports two rust spreading barberry bushes to federal agent R. O. Bulger. The medal, from the Minneapolis conference, honors youths who locate barberry plants in rust areas. Johnson is the fourth recipient in South Dakota. 33 bushes found in Charles Mix County on ten properties so far this season.

Straw Loft Poultry Houses Boost Hens at Plainview Academy

At Plainview Academy near Redfield, Mr. J. A. Salisbury reports that a flock of over 500 White Leghorn hens performs well in straw loft houses. He notes cooler summer and warmer winter temps, better ventilation, and lower costs with straw loft construction using lightweight joists, slats, and about two feet of straw.

Cackleberry 4-H Poultry Team to State Fair

A Carthage based Cackleberry 4-H Club sends a poultry demonstration team from Miner county to the South Dakota State Fair in Huron from September 9 to 13. Helene Olson returns from last year’s team, while Josephine Sundell debuts in poultry demonstration work with Effie Older as leader and coach.

Vitas Shipment Tops Sioux City Market

Vitas shipment led market gains in Sioux City as steers shipped by A. P. Karlin of Vitas South Dakota sold at 16.25 per hundredweight. Other South Dakota consignments included 36 head from A Hoch and Son of Scotland at 15.50 and a run of yearling stock from W R Jacobs of Running Water at 15.75.

Miner County 4-H Health Champ Winners Named

In Howard on August 31 four H club members from Miner County aged fifteen and up attended a health clinic to select a county health champion boy and girl for the State Fair. The two winners earn a free trip to the state exposition September 9 to 13, announced by county agent L W Jones.

August Weather Hurts Perkins Crops

In Perkins county August dry weather hurt grain and corn yields though early grain remained decent. Wheat yielded 10 to 12 bushels per acre, weighed 53 to 62 pounds, with high protein around 14 percent. Early flax and barley, oats, and speltz reported fair to good quality and yields.

Polo Rural Schools Reopen After Holiday Break

Polo rural schools in Fairview and Howgh townships plan to open Monday September 7 under supervision of Franker in Polo and Lidy from Weasington with Bowman of Miller and Mattaney of Polo. The notice instructs families to prepare for the new term and confirms staffing for the school system.

Yankton Farmers Build Private Gravel Road

Yankton County farmers Frank Frick Sioux City and Thomas J. Frick Yankton completed a private graveling project described as the county’s first privately funded gravel highway. The one and a half mile stretch runs north from gravelled No. 50 toward Cedar Bluffs along the James River road, ending at the Frick lands. the Fricks alone bore all costs.

Kinga Mine Sold to Maywood Chemical Company

RAPID CITY August 31 sale of the Kinga mica mine at Keystone to the Maywood Chemical Company is reported. The firm operates the Etta podomeric mine at Keystone and plans to mine beryl due to high demand, especially in Germany. The mica is not mined now because of competition from odia and lack of tariff protection.

Mystery Man in Comfort Hills Baffles Deadwood Officers

Deadwood sheriffs searched hills near the city for a naked man seen by children at timber edge. After days of effort no trace was found and officials concluded the wanderer was likely a tourist seeking relief from heat who stripped to stay cool.

Legume Growth Shown in Ziebach County 1929 Report

Ziebach county assessors' 1929 report shows alfalfa hay up by 2,323 acres to 8,930 and alfalfa seed production rising from 149.5 to 864 bushels. Registered alfalfa covers 1,086 acres owned by 25 farmers, with Grimm and Cossack varieties totaling 1,086. Sweet clover adds 2,918 acres and seed yield climbs by 477.5 bushels, signaling more winter feed and pasture per acre.

Trick horse to be shown at Sioux City event

In Wessington on August 31 Special Earl Bowen plans to showcase his trick horse Royal Flush a six year old gelding at Riverview Park round up near Sioux City. The horse will clear an automobile with five occupants as rider A Bonami guides the stunt while Howen intends to take the animal to the state fair next month.

Wessington Man Showcases Flower Garden Splendor

Wessington resident H C Robsahm, a local grocer and meat market operator, has drawn hundreds of visitors to his floricultural display. He grows roses and gladiolas among other blooms and has donated bouquets to neighbors and the sick. Robsahm previously won sweepstakes prizes at a Huron flower show and had five first-place entries at another Huron exhibit.

Sheridan community fair speakers set Labor Day program

WATERTOWN August 31. Ad dresses sports and agricultural exhibits fill the program for the fourth annual Sheridan community fair at Munger schoolhouse four and a half miles southeast of Watertown on Labor Day September 2. A. W. Tomkins of Huron secretary of the South Dakota Farm Bureau federation and Lloyd Peterson judge of the Watertown municipal court are principal speakers.

Poison used to save $25,000 alfalfa crop in Hughes county

George Otis, a farmer south of Blunt, saved a large alfalfa seed crop after applying a grasshopper poison blend of white arsenic, bran, alfalfa meal, molasses, and salt. Two trucks covered the field with careful staggering to ensure full kill, achieving up to 100 percent in edges and 65 percent in heavily infested areas, with follow up treatment after a few days. Altogether 325 pounds of arsenic were used.

40 Days and 350 Dollar Fine for Liquor Manufacture

Robert Schlaeth was arrested by county and federal officers in Yankton on a charge of manufacturing liquor. At the preliminary hearing he pled guilty and received 40 days in jail and a $350 fine. He was found operating a fully equipped still in a cornfield with about 16 gallons of finished product on hand.

Nine thousand Montana range lambs are being shipped into Lake county to be fed and finished for market. The operation ships to Lake county and is dated August 21 with Montana origin noted.

Four Rapid City attorneys chartered a special plane of Rapid Air Lines to attend the South Dakota State Bar association annual convention in Watertown which closed yesterday. The lawyers were George Williams, H. R. Fellows, George Phillips, and J. Harley.
