Oldest Railroad Abandoned From Honesdale to Carbondale
The Delaware and Hudson line once carried America's first locomotive the Stourbridge Lion from Honesdale to Carbondale. The Interstate Commerce Commission authorized its abandonment citing progress and the shift to motor vehicles and trucks. At the time engineers like Philip Howe and Benjamin Wright planned a coal line from Carbondale to Honesdale, enabling canal links to New York. The fragile seven ton locomotive faced weight limits, yet its legacy spurred later advances as America’s industry grew.
