A warrant was issued in Municipal court for Herbert Bates on second degree manslaughter charges after a fatal August 1 crash near Huron. Bates, a Travelers Insurance mortgage fieldman, was en route to Portland. Miss Gertrude Goodell died from injuries August 3. The accident occurred on Federal Highway No. 14 east of Huron during a dance party ride. Bates was not in the city. others in his car included Jane Urquhart and Ray Elias. Franklin Brown drove the other vehicle.
