Relief employment on graveling job in Wolsey county

H M Pierce county highway superintendent says 40 men monthly for two months will get relief work on an emergency graveling project along U S 281 north of Wolsey. Ten miles to be resurfaced, crew of about eight, paid 40 cents hourly up to $7.50 a month, with hand labor and gravel hauled by trucks. State commission plans bridge painting to follow, with about five workers. Federal highway projects unlikely before mid September unless prepa­rations are accelerated.

Harvest Cost Aid to Farmers Under Government Loan Plan

Farmers with government loans may use a portion of their 1939 crop proceeds to cover harvest and threshing costs if an equal amount is applied to the loan. Purchasers can advance up to $2 per acre without liens, with remittances to the Seed Loan office and priority to those who supplied equipment or labor. Receipts will be held for verification by field inspectors.

Officers To Meet Here August 31 For School Discussion

County officials from independent and common school districts will hold an annual meeting in the county seat on August 31. LD Weeks state superintendent of public instruction will attend to discuss the gross income tax and its administration for schools and review recent legislation affecting education. The next day the annual county normal institute begins and will last two days, with Weeks staying over.

First Wheat Allotment Meeting Draws 175 Farmers

About 175 farmers attended the first district wheat allotment meeting in Huron yesterday with Roy Cave explaining the plan. Attendees hailed from Iowa, Théresa, Valley, Clyde, Cus Iter, Grant and Clifton townships, with more meetings planned this week and township sessions next week to elect representatives. If 100 percent sign up, Beadle county producers may receive around 150000 dollars in benefits this year.

Million Released In State In 1932

Life insurance death payments on policy loans in 1932 totaled $8,000,000 in South Dakota, up $900,000 from 1931. Huron saw $57,000 in money circulated, with $11,503 in death claims and the rest in policy loans. The largest single payment was $100,000 on Scott M. Banebury of Geddes. Sioux Falls led with $32,000 in distributions, Aberdeen second with $347,000.
