Urge Citizens To Volunteer For Defense Corps

An official urged able-bodied locals in Huron to join the Citizens Defense Corps. Dr. R A Stratton, chief of the air raid warden division, said volunteers from all ages and occupations are needed to begin training as the U S Army activates South Dakota. Pedestrian Saves Girl From Fire Escape Fall

In Coffeyville Kansas on August 5 pedestrian Joe Cramer watched a two year old girl hang from a high fire escape. Her finger slipped and she plunged toward the sidewalk. Cramer caught her inches from the concrete and saved her life in a dramatic rescue.

Washington reports plans for a nationwide registration of women 18 to 44 to tally available labor for wartime production. Two Huronians Receive Wings at Gulf Coast Training Center

Two Huron men Lieut. Carl W. Hay and Lieut. Maynard A. Ingalls were graduated as part of the largest class in Gulf Coast Air Force Training Center history. Graduation followed 27 weeks of intensive flight training as insignia were pinned and miniature wings mailed to mothers and sweethearts.
