Advice On Russian Thistles For Hay In Beadle County
Beadle County farmers receive guidance from county agent R A Cave and a North Dakota State circular on using Russian thistles for hay and silage. Experts warn thistles are emergency feed, best cut in bloom, and that once spines harden they lose feeding value. Feeding value is limited, with higher digestible protein than prairie hay but lower than alfalfa, and excessive thistle use can cause severe laxative effects or death if fed alone.
