Jones County Board Cuts 1929 Budget Totals

Murdo August meeting of Jones County commissioners approved a reduced budget for the coming year. The appropriation drops to 79 210 from 89 327 for the present year, a saving of more than 10 000.

Fall River County Wheat Crops Looking Good

Fall River county wheat crops are reported to be good with the hum at the corthines already started. Yields are expected between 12 and 20 bushels per acre, according to County Agent S. Lt. Sloan. Rye harvest may run about 20 bushels per acre.

State Highway Commission Sets 282 Miles Graveling

Contracts for 282 miles of graveling and resurfacing on the state trunk highway system totaling 225538.48 dollars were set by the state highway commission. The bulk of work 248259 miles will be resurfaced in fourteen projects. Two graveling projects in Minnehaha and Yankton counties total 83.783 miles.

Funeral Saturday For Mrs. E. R. Karr

Funeral services for Mrs. E. R. Karr will be held Saturday in Mellette. She died at the home of her daughter Mrs. J. G. Johns in Hettinger North Dakota after a lingering illness. Survivors include Mr. and Mrs. H. Holcomb of Carthage and Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Evans of Alpena, nephews among relatives.

Oats yield 32 bushels per acre near Argonne

A local report from Argonne notes William Gorath threshed oats at 32 bushels per acre and barley at 18 bushels per acre despite the year’s unusual drought. Most small grain in the area is expected to yield fairly well under the drought conditions.

Use Varied Means To Harvest Crop

Harvest of small grain crops in Mellette area will end this week. Despite limited threshing, hail on July 12 left crops varied. farmers employ combines, mowing machines, rakes, headers, binders, and windrowers to salvage grain. Some tenants are paid for using combines, despite mixed yields.

Kilties to Compete at Legion Convention in Mitchell

Pierre Kilties drum corps, the state’s official American Legion unit, will depart August 4 for the Mitchell Legion convention August 5 to 7. The group, winner of sixth place at the national Legion event, will face teams from Huron Rapid City Madison Aberdeen Onida Lemmon and Garden City. Approximately 100 Pierre Legion members will attend, led by Walter Burke Trent Stout and George Adams. The Kilties in authentic Scotch uniforms will lead parades. the corps features ten snares two bass drums ten bugles and two bagpipe sets. Paul Dowell is drum major and Claude Whitlock is musical instructor.
