Tree Plantations to Receive Payment Under Soil Program
Brookings April 30 Special Plantings of forest trees qualify for class 1 and class 2 payments under the new soil conservation program, per State College extension forester Frank I Rockwell. Standards require suitable land, sturdy locally hardy trees, four years of cultivation, fencing to prevent livestock, protection from pests, and guidance from extension service. Plantations should be shelterbelts, windbreaks, or groves for wood production, with details available from County Agent Leonard L. Lada or the local soil conservation office. Copies of the circular Planting and Care of Trees by South Dakota are at the county agent's office.
