High Octane Gas Production Increases At Pace
Petroleum Administrator Ickes told the Truman committee that 100 octane gasoline capacity has risen month by month for eight months since Pearl Harbor. He forecast continued gains and said production would exceed prior estimates by next winter with sufficient materials. Nelson linked rubber program priorities to fuel needs and warned of rubber bankruptcy risk if Buna S completion ran late, a move Ickes argued could jeopardize 100 octane gasoline progress.

Rubber and aviation fuel clash in wartime policy
Senate committee members debated the cost of expanding aircraft production versus continuing tire and gasoline restrictions. Nelson defended the move as beneficial to the war effort, noting high octane refineries require 12 to 15 months and halting rubber would delay immediate plane fuel gains. Senators Brewster Ferguson Ball warned the rubber shortage may persist into 1944 and urged Jeffers to justify the liberalized tire and recapping provisions when he testifies next.
