Federal Agencies To Help State In Handling Problem
South Dakota will coordinate state and federal farm labor facilities to address a possible labor shortage. A county network will collect and share information, aiming to fill demand with local workers when possible and with nearby labor if needed. April supply stood at 92 percent of demand, the first shortfall in the four monthly farm labor period since 1935.

Farm labor under supply and high demand in April
The April farm labor supply in the state stands at 81 percent of normal while demand hits 8 percent of normal. The 81 percent supply marks the lowest since October 1935, and April demand is the highest since 1930. Causes include late seeding from rains, selective service mobilization, defense labor shifts, and good crop prospects. Wages rose to an average of 83 dollars monthly with board, or 45.75 without, and daily rates of 1.50 with board and 2.10 without.

Possible Oil Field Near Chamberlain Reported In Survey
A large anticlinal area between the Big Bend of the Missouri River and the Bijou Hills is identified as potentially interesting to oil prospectors. The region, uncovered during manganese work near Chamberlain, could host gas shows in water wells. Prospecting may cost little as sediments need not exceed about 2,500 feet. The findings appear in a report by Wing and Gries and are distributed by the South Dakota State Geological Survey.
