State College Hosts Jackrabbit Roundup for 600 Seniors

BROOKINGS April 23 College students will host high school seniors and guardians May 7 for the annual achievement day and Jackrabbit Roundup. More than 600 SD students expected. last year 1000 attended. Keith Webster Woonsocket chaired the three fold program featuring awards, entertainment, and exhibits. Schedule includes general assembly 9:30 a.m. theater 10 a.m. to 12 department exhibits 12 to 1:15 p.m. barbecue 1:15 to 3 p.m. exhibits 1:15 to 2:30 p.m. varsity football 3:30 p.m. parade 3 p.m. and dance 7 p.m. at the armory with college union access for visiting seniors.

Lane High School Contest Honors Earned by Students

Lane High School students earned superior, good, and excellent ratings at a music contest in Wessington Springs. Am Scheel, a junior, won superior with a vocal solo. Cross, a sophomore, was a ward with her solo. Scheel received a gold wound pin and each sextet member got a silver pin. The choir and band will perform next Friday at the larger group contest.

Geelan Named Sioux Falls Police Chief

Guy Geelan, 54, former warden of the South Dakota Penitentiary and once Sioux Falls police chief, is restored to the police chief role by Mayor John D. McKee. Acting chief Carol L. Galvin’s term ends, Galvin’s future role unclear. A church funeral was held for Warden Eugene after a prison incident. Norton Jameson and Clarence Shanky mentioned in passing.

South Dakota to Survey manganese deposits for foreign competition

Governor Bunhfield has directed State Geologist E. P. Rothrock to survey South Dakota manganese deposits. Field work starts summer, aiming to assess tonnage, metal, mining hurdles, and extraction methods. A Tennessee firm tests electrolytic refining using TVA power and a Cuban separation method is proposed. Researchers note SD holds the nation's largest deposits, though prior federal work covered only part of the area.

Bancroft Man Moved From California To Colorado Air Field

Donald A Costello of the 88th Recon Squadron has been assigned to the Air Corps Technical School at Lowry Field Colorado. A son of Mr and Mrs Dan E Costello of Bancroft he has been in the Air Corps since October 2 1939 and is advancing toward higher rank and pay. Training will qualify him as a supply clerk and a technical expert for civilian life and his military career. He traveled by air from Hamilton Field to Lowry Field.

Personnel changes at St Dakota School for the Deaf

Two personnel changes at St Dakota School for the Deaf take effect in September after state board approval. N. F. Waller named principal and Martha Peterson named teacher, replacing Sarah E. Lewis who resigned last December and is now in Massachusetts. Walker holds Gallaudet College credentials and will complete another M A in June. Peterson previously taught at the Minnesota School for the Deaf.

Celebrates 98th Birthday At Lane

Mrs. Ole Johnson Lane’s oldest woman resident celebrated her 92rd birthday at home on Saturday. The Johnsons homesteaded south of Lane in 1882 and have lived in Jerauld County since. Grandma Johnson has lived with her son Albert and his wife since her husband’s death 12 years ago. The event drew about thirty guests for luncheon with flowers cards and letters from coast to coast.
