Student Weekly Wins All American Rating at State College

The In irial Collegian, a student weekly at State College in Brookings, earned an All American rating from the Associated College Press for the past year. It was the only South Bakers paper to win the award this year, marking the fifth time in its history the paper ranked among the nation's top weeklies, with earlier top rating in 1936 under Normac Rumple.

Yankton College President to be Honored at Dakota Conference

Retiring Yankton College president Dr George W Nash will be honored at a Yankton College union service during the South Dakota Presidential Conference May 2 to 3 Expected to draw about 300 ministers and laymen. Other program features include remarks by Dr Oscar Maurer of New Haven Conn Dr David W Beach of Minneapolis Rev William Frazier of New York and a Sioux Indian service with Rev Rudolf Hertz of Eagle Butte delivering a sermon and a hymn. A officers blessing is scheduled for May 4.

Edward Malmstrom born October 22 1920 in Perstrop Sweden plans to place an American flag in the center of his birthday cake when he turns twenty one next October to mark his oath of allegience and U.S. citizenship He arrived in the United States July 22 1921 with his parents who settled near Leola North Dakota and later learned about the citizenship process from abroad born to foreign parents he will become a citizen in full standing after swearing the oath on his twenty first birthday in October 1941

University Groups Admit New Members

Vermillion April 1pm Wesley Foundation hosts new members for Theta and Kappa Phi Methodist groups at the State University. Nine teen men pledge eight more men. eleven women initiate in Kappa Phi. Names include Coe Husser, Frank McGregor, Robert Hart, Linus Webber, and Shirley Christensen, among others. Meetings feature religious discussions and social events.

Reelected PTA Leader and Scout Plans Highlight Meeting

Mrs. L. H. Palmer was reelected president of the P.T.A. at the year end meeting on Tuesday. The group planned to sponsor troop 14 of the Boy Scouts and appointed a committee to arrange the annual all school picnic. Statistics note that city birth rates decline as populations grow.

Armistice Week Opens for Overdue Book Returns

Madison April 18. Eastern Normal School Librarian Catherine Whitehorn declared an armistice week allowing students to return overdue books and magazines without penalty. After the parade 28 books and 38 magazines were found missing since last year, while some shorter overdue items returned to circulation.

A large crowd attended the open house Monday evening in the Virgil School auditorium under the Milwaukee Railway Service Club sponsorship. Speakers included H. E. Lucas, Aberdeen, and R. A. Burns, Aberdeen. Others offering short remarks were Dudley, R. C. Dodds, William Kane, KE. F. Boettcher, and Lisle Young. J. J. Maunders was master of ceremonies. musical selections by B. L. Maunders and James Spatafore. A social hour and dancing followed.

St Lawrence High to Enter 63 in State Contest

St Lawrence High School will send sixty three contestants to the state regional contest at Winchester Springs on April 19 and 26. The band with fifty four members is the largest ensemble, followed by the Girls Glee Club with twenty five. Army Shelter Funds Increased for Fort Meade Cavalry

Representative Francis Case said the army quartermaster allocated 19600 for post shelter at Fort Meade for the Fourth Cavalry’s mechanized equipment. The unit recovers from horse status to a mixed mechanized and portable horse unit and will return to Fort Meade in late May. The 15600 original grant was increased to 19600 for direct shelter or for a Work Projects Administration project using salvaged materials.

Potter County Couple Celebrate Golden Wedding

GETTYSBURG April 18 A Potter County couple Mr and Mrs John Wise celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary at their home seven miles northwest of Gettysburg A large number of friends and out of town guests attended Wise born in Luxembourg Germany came to Potter County in 1883 He filed on a homestead and has lived on the same farm since 1883 Mrs Wise born in Iowa moved to Potter County in 1883 They were married in 1890 Wise dug a fifty foot well in 1887 curbed with stones still the only such well in Potter County There are six children and eight grandchildren In Fedora April 18 Special Honor students named Bethel Kelsey valedictorian Arlene Slemmen and Lavina Scott tied for salutatorian Seniors average over ninety in four years of high school work.

Vermillion April 18 Phi Delta Phi a national legal fraternity at the State University initiated one and announced the pledging of two students in the University law school at a recent banquet Dick Bielski Sioux Falls was initiated and Bill North Pipestone Minnesota and Glenn Wohsler Watertown were pledged Honored guest at the banquet and initiation of his son was R A Bielski Sioux Falls who was one of the petitioners of the local chapter when he attended the University law school in 1910 An election of officers was also held at this meeting Fred Potter Rock Island Ill was elected magister Dick Bielski was elected ex chequer Ross Oviatt Huron was elected historian and John Hassett Aberdeen was elected clerk Men are pledged to Phi Delta Phi on the basis of character and scholarship.

Authority On Persian Rugs To Appear In Huron

Yanan of Appleton Wisconsin renowned Persian rug authority will speak at Huron College in the college chapel Monday April 29 at 5 pm. The public may attend. He has traveled widely and served as Rotary International delegate to clubs in Europe and Asia. He will present over 4000 feet of moving pictures of eastern Europe and the Near East along with his talk.

Increase in Motor Accidents in South Dakota 1940

South Dakota drivers suffered 18 deaths and 217 injuries in the first quarter of 1940, up from 14 fatalities and 176 injuries the previous year. The accident count rose from 262 to 48, and property damage increased from 40,787 to 63,627, per Olive Ringsrud, Secretary of State.
