Draft Limits May Be Changed To Reach Younger Men
Washington April 16 Congress may amend the selective service act to require military training for a younger group than the 21 to 30 age bracket. Roosevelt said the matter was under study by the war department and congressional committees and might be discussed formally in June. Army sources said the blanket ban on induction of men with serious criminal records was relaxed to allow training of some previously undesirable individuals. Selective service officials extended the trainee reporting period to five to ten days, with local boards able to lengthen to 60 days. The Association of American Railroads said a new low fare of 14 4 cents a mile would take effect around May 17 for round trip coach travel for uniformed service members on furlough traveling at their own expense.

New Medicine Fights Leukemia Remedy Prolongs Life
Chicago reports a breakthrough using radioactive phosphorus shots to extend life in acute leukemia, a deadly form of blood cancer. Six Boston patients survived beyond a year, with one back at work, while four others died. Phosphorus concentrates in bone marrow, killing abnormal white cells and keeping counts near normal with infrequent boosters. Dr Warren notes the disease is controlled, not cured, likening it to insulin control of diabetes.
