Stratosphere Germ Hunt Planned By Nat Geog Society
The National Geographic Society and the Army Air Corps plan a June mission to seek living spores of plant and other microscopic life in the stratosphere. A new device will fish spores seven to 15 miles up, dropped by snail parachute from a balloon reaching about 18 miles. The effort aims to learn if spores can survive extreme conditions and UV exposure, with implications for crop pests and hay fever sources.
