In Los Angeles a juvenile court ordered 11 year old Chloe Davis kept in strict sequestered custody until April 17 and possibly ward status at 21. A coroner’s jury found she bore little blame in California’s brutal hammer slaying linked to her mother and siblings.

Seven Probationists Released In Federal Court

Seven individuals on federal probation for various offenses were released after satisfying probation terms. Names and charges include Charles R. Wilson Aberdeen for government obligation, D. Cosgrove Rapid City for mail fraud attempts, Harm and Frank Johnson Madison for untaxed liquor, O’Connel and Edward Gleich Ravinia for liquor sales to an Indian, and Joseph Carter Greenwood for liquor on an Indian reservation.

Cold Damp Weather Delays Field Work In South Dakota

Federal meteorologist B R Baskowski reports in a 1940 crop and weather review that cold damp, cloudy conditions delayed field work across South Dakota. Some seeding occurred in the southeast, winter wheat and rye greened, pastures improved, lawns turned green, and early gardens appeared. Temperatures ranged 35 to 45 F by day, 20 to 30 F by night, with rainfall and snow varying by county, and snow and ice covering the northeast.

Norway Loses Her Two Biggest Ships

Reuters News Agency reported that Norway’s two largest warships the Norge and Eidsvold each 4 166 tons were torpedoed and sunk by German vessels at Narvik Norway Only 20 of the 560 crew were saved according to the Swedish Social Demokraten newspaper.

Notify Office If Missed By Census Enumerator

Urges residents of Huron area not yet visited by a census taker to contact the Huron area census office. James Venables, area census supervisor, thanked cooperators and urged missed individuals to report to assure a complete count. Local residents may call 2336 or send a postal card to the area office. Venables said the 1946 population figure could be released next week. The count was to finish in cities over 2,500 by mid April with smaller towns needing about two more weeks.

Britain and Germany clash in major Narvik battle

London reports a dawn naval duel off Narvik as five British destroyers fought six German destroyers. Britain claimed sinking one German ship and damaging three, while two British destroyers were sunk and another damaged. Chamberlain announced a British victory and Norway's coast saw heavy fighting with ships, air forces, and shore batteries involved.

Seized Territory Size Mapped Against Denmark Norway
