Interest Revived In River Project

Efforts by the Upper Missouri Development association to secure federal funds for Missouri River improvements in South Dakota revive support for the Big Bend power project near the loop that encircles about 22,000 acres. Proponents led by Charles S. Weller cite a neck cut producing a 21 foot drop, water power, and a canal for 20 miles of boat travel, with a tunnel option cutting total costs to about 2.17 million dollars plus transmission lines. Critics like Daniel W Mead and Charles Seastone warned the neck height makes a canal impractical and a tunnel would divert low water, undermining navigation, suggesting no full investigation.
