Mystery double killing baffles Chicago police
In Chicago a wealthy widow Mrs Helen Kelso, 70, and her maid Mrs Ida Peterson were found with the maid dead from a knife wound and the widow badly battered. Police initially favored murder suicide but coroners’ investigators found evidence suggesting a third person may have been involved. The maid had a troubled history and was once hospitalized for mania. Doctors noted the maid could have struck with enough force to drive the knife blade in, while blood at the scene implied the widow may have been attacked after the maid’s death. The maid’s body lay on her bed, a bloodied hammer nearby, and the widow lay unconscious on another room floor with a fractured skull. recovery for her looked unlikely.
