Five New School Bills Passed by Legislature in Pierre

Pierre April 4 Five measures affecting the department of school and public lands and one proposed constitutional amendment were passed by the last legislature. The amendment directs fines for state law violations paid into the schools land fund to be apportioned to districts by school age population. County treasurers must report all fines, and a ten year escheat limit is set with funds placed in a special fund. The board may grant easements across lands, and contracts may be set aside if heirs fail to fulfill. A land exchange moves 7680 acres for 7699 acres to create compact blocks in Custer and Harding counties.
