Union Building Opens on Thursday at State College

Brookings April 3 State College students will get a first look at the new quarter-million dollar Union with a grand opening likely April 4. The program includes matinee and evening dances, lounge use, fountain, short order service, possible coffee hour and free movies. Guides will escort groups through the four-story building with floor plans and welcome letters.

Library Makes Bid For Male Patrons Milbank

Milbank April 3. Cornelia B Kaercher public librarian is rounding up the men to boost male library usage. Noting women outnumbered men as borrowers she has had men serving as page boys among the stacks to spark interest. Women trustees served coffee and doughnuts to councilmen at the campaign start and a list of books appealing to males is being offered.

Short features and cartoons shown with union funded self-sufficiency

The program lists travelogues and educational shorts amid a building financed by a PWA grant and self-liquidating bonds at no state cost. Students set a Union Building fee to launch the movement and several organizations have donated profits to a Union fund. The Union aims to cover current expenses and retire bonds.

Yankton Glee Club Concert at Preston

Yankton College men’s glee club under Fenton Charles directed a concert in Congregational Church on Monday evening. Soloists Jimmy Devine and Robert Lewis, and pianist Sam Keck highlighted the program. Afterward the young men were entertained at local homes by Supt. and Mrs. Coulson and others assisted with hospitality.

Redfield JHS Hosts Extempore Contest

Redfield junior high held what is believed to be South Dakota’s first extempore speaking contest for all students. Seventy one speakers chose topics and spoke with 153 minutes of prep replacing former declamation events. Superior speakers included Barbara Hinman Richard Waldorf Raymond Wood Marjorie Coxe Modesta Wagon Selden Saunders Dick Gibson Phyllis Luxton Patricia Stumpf Sonia Bly Joyce Reinecke Bob Gates and Marguerite Teitz.

454 Car Licenses Sold In Hyde County

Hyde County treasurer Mabel Whipple reports that by March 31 the county issued 454 auto licenses, 67 dealers licenses, 42 trailers and one trailer house. Total receipts 246.75 with past due fees included. Of this, 46.12 percent goes to the county motor fund, 30 percent to county special highway, 20 percent to state highway, and 3.42 percent to state general fund.

Spearfish notes a building boom tied to Homestake milling operations. Since Feb 1 permits total about 32793 dollars in private construction. Five new homes valued at 2000 dollars or more are under construction. Local families expect to move in once the new lumber mill operates fully.

No City Election In Miller This Spring

Miller will have no city election this year due to lack of opposition. Alderman H Collins and J A Haverstock seek reelection for their wards, while Frank Scofield will replace W W Fox as third ward alderman. They will automatically take office. April 16. Museum attracts crowds to Adams Memorial Hall

Highmore High School seniors select the three act comedy Tommy for their final drama production. Kenneth Holum directs with Kathryn Ryan as Marie Thurber and Bob McAtee as Tommy. Final Band Clinic in Highmore Unites 90 Musicians

Final Band Clinic Held At Highmore brought together sLGHmans E McTaggert Pierre D Schuster Gettysburg P Putman Onida and W Moyer Agar band directors with local players. The combined Highmore band formed a 90 piece ensemble under visiting conductors for an afternoon concert of pieces slated for the spring music festival. The event capped three clinics in the area during late winter followed by a tea dance.

Mrs Louis Robinson underwent an appendicitis operation Friday at Baldwin hospital Redfield and is reported to be recovering. Spink County Farmers Near 95 Percent in AAA Plan

Redfield April 3 Special With the May 1 deadline for farm plans and conservation agreements 95 percent of Spink county farmers over 1800 signers have indicated they will join the 1940 AAA program County chairman George Bierman said 1940 participation includes 13 cents per bushel corn Hormel yield 19 cents per bushel normal yield wheat allotment about 110 per acre for general crops and special payments for practices such as tree planting seeding alfalfa and grasses dam construction contour farming access to corn and wheat loans and eligibility for federal crop insurance.

Annual Meeting Held At Hitchcock Church
