Constitution Quitter Oyntor Hay Wins Ungraceful Finish
Aug 24 The Columbia glided across the finish line at 49 o'clock for the eighth time, beating the Constitution. The victory drew the loudest cheers from the crowd and rival Grin yacht, which had been beaten previously by the same boat. The Constitution appeared to quit late, as the Columbia held a steady lead and crossed first while the Constitution faded, blamed on an early setback and poor steering.
