McKinley Urges Against Free Silver in 1896 Campaign
President Republican nominee William McKinley writes from Canton Ohio arguing against free coinage of silver. He cites prior silver dollars and warns of financial peril from the Democratic and silver party platform. A separate Customs Service shakeup sees inspector Thomas Cook and chief appraiser Charles Fishel dismissed amid a broader purge following a ministerial conference and opium-smuggling concerns.
