McKinley Urges Against Free Silver in 1896 Campaign

President Republican nominee William McKinley writes from Canton Ohio arguing against free coinage of silver. He explains the 16 to 1 silver to gold ratio would hurt credit and industry, detailing how bullion owners could profit while the government bears coinage costs. He cites prior silver dollars and warns of financial peril from the Democratic and silver party platform. Port Portuguese milk vendor shot in self defense aftermath

Police report Kaapani, a Honolulu patrol officer, shot and fatally wounded Portuguese milk vendor Paxeco during a pursuit over cattle impounding on the Panoa valley road. Paxeco attacked with a whip as reinforcements arrived. the officer fired, the bullet entering Paxeco’s right breast and lodging near the lung. Paxeco, known for trouble, died at home shortly after.
